
Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra's Crease Is Gone — Or Is It? What Flex Titanium Actually Does
Samsung's biggest claim at Galaxy Unpacked 2026 was a bold one: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra are "nearly crease-free," thanks to a new display technology called Flex Titanium. Within hours of hands-on time, the reviews told a more complicated story. The crease is visually reduced — but it still very much exists to the touch.
Here's what Flex Titanium actually is, what it actually changed, and why the distinction matters before you buy.
What Is Flex Titanium?
Every foldable display needs a structural support layer underneath the OLED panel. On every previous Galaxy Z Fold — from the original through the Fold 7 — that layer was a carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), which is essentially high-grade plastic. Flex Titanium replaces that plastic layer with a titanium-alloy film.
Titanium has roughly 20 times the mechanical stiffness of the previous polymer layer. This matters because the old plastic layer would stretch and lose tension over months of use, allowing the OLED panel to gradually sag into the hinge area — which is why older Galaxy Folds often develop a more pronounced crease over time.
The second element is a redesigned titanium base plate beneath the display module. This plate now has micro-perforations that allow it to bond seamlessly with the display stack with zero air gaps. Eliminating those air gaps is what primarily reduces the visual appearance of the crease — the fold no longer has a shadow-causing void underneath it.

What It Changed: Visual vs. Tactile
The results are measurable but asymmetric. Visually, the crease on the Fold 8 Ultra is significantly less visible than on the Fold 7. In bright lighting, the fold line is nearly invisible at most viewing angles. Samsung's own demo environment at Unpacked confirmed this improvement is real.
Tactilely, the experience is different. Multiple hands-on reviewers noted the same thing: running a finger across the display still produces the same bump-dip-bump sensation as the Fold 7. The hinge design itself has not changed this generation. Flex Titanium changes how the display panel behaves above the hinge — but the hinge mechanism beneath it is unchanged.
The practical implication: in regular use, especially in portrait mode with the crease running top-to-bottom, most people will not notice the crease visually. In landscape mode — where your thumb regularly crosses the crease left-to-right — you will still feel it.

Why Flex Titanium Also Killed the S Pen
Titanium is a metal. Metals interfere with the digitizers that make S Pen input possible. This is the direct technical reason neither the Fold 8 nor the Fold 8 Ultra support the S Pen. Samsung EVP HS Moon confirmed at Unpacked that the company is "exploring" S Pen's return for future generations — which is a clear acknowledgment that Flex Titanium and stylus support are currently incompatible.

What This Means for Long-Term Display Durability
The more significant improvement from Flex Titanium is long-term durability, not day-one crease visibility. The old polymer support layer would mechanically fatigue over months of folding. The titanium layer has dramatically higher fatigue resistance — meaning the crease should remain at its current level (or improve slightly) over the device's lifespan, rather than getting worse.
Previous Fold models were known for developing more visible creases after six to twelve months of heavy use. Flex Titanium directly addresses this failure mode. If you plan to keep your Fold 8 Ultra for two or more years, this improvement matters more than the day-one display appearance.
What This Means for Case Choice
Flex Titanium changes the display layer — it does not change the hinge mechanism or the outer frame. The hinge remains the most expensive component to repair out of warranty ($350–$500 for Samsung out-of-warranty hinge service). A case that protects the hinge without trapping debris in the mechanism remains as important as on any previous Fold model.

The crease debate will continue until Apple's foldable arrives in September with its reportedly more aggressive crease elimination. Until then, the Fold 8 Ultra has the least-visible crease of any Samsung foldable yet — with the caveat that "least visible" and "gone" are not the same thing.
