More strikingly, memory had historically represented roughly 10–15% of a smartphone's bill of materials, according to TrendForce. Under 2026 market conditions, that share was estimated to have climbed to 30–40%.

That's not a minor supply-chain fluctuation.

It's a fundamental shift in one of the major costs of building a smartphone.

Why Is Smartphone Memory Getting So Expensive?

The short answer is AI.

But the longer explanation is more interesting.

The AI boom isn't limited to ChatGPT on your laptop or an AI assistant running on your phone. Behind these services are enormous data centers filled with servers that require huge amounts of memory.

AI infrastructure has created intense demand for high-performance memory, particularly server DRAM, HBM, and enterprise storage.

Memory manufacturers naturally have an incentive to prioritize the products and customers offering the strongest demand and highest margins.

That changes the economics of memory production.

TrendForce reported earlier in 2026 that DRAM suppliers were reallocating capacity toward server-related applications, while NAND capacity was increasingly being directed toward enterprise SSDs.

Your next iPhone and a giant AI data center obviously don't use exactly the same memory products.

But they're connected through the same broader semiconductor industry, manufacturing priorities, capacity decisions, and supply chains.

That's why the AI boom can eventually affect the price of a smartphone sitting in your pocket.

AI Is Creating a Strange Smartphone Storage Paradox

There's an interesting contradiction here.

AI is making memory more expensive.

At the same time, AI is making smartphones need more memory.

Modern AI features increasingly perform tasks directly on the device rather than sending everything to the cloud.

That has advantages for speed, privacy, and offline functionality, but local AI models need somewhere to live.

According to TrendForce, edge AI models on flagship smartphones can require approximately 40GB to 60GB of system storage as cache space for local AI processing.

That's a substantial amount of storage before you even start thinking about your own photos, videos, games, and downloads.

This creates a difficult equation for smartphone manufacturers:

AI increases demand for memory → memory becomes more expensive → AI phones require more memory → manufacturers need to add capacity while controlling costs.

Only a few years ago, 128GB felt generous for many smartphone users.

That standard is beginning to change.

Part of that shift comes from ordinary consumer behavior.

Camera files are getting larger. Apps are becoming more complex. Mobile games can consume tens of gigabytes. Users keep more offline content on their phones.

AI accelerates the trend.

If tens of gigabytes are potentially being allocated to system-level AI functionality, manufacturers have less room to offer low-capacity devices without compromising the user experience.

There's also a supply-side reason.

As NAND manufacturers move toward newer manufacturing processes and higher-density products, producing very low-capacity storage configurations becomes less attractive.

The result is unusual.

Even though NAND Flash has become expensive, the industry may still move toward larger storage capacities.

Not because storage is suddenly cheap, but because lower capacities increasingly make less sense technologically and economically.

So Why Not Give iPhone 18 Pro 512GB as Standard?

If 256GB is becoming mainstream, it might seem logical for Apple's Pro devices to take another step forward and start at 512GB.

But doubling storage two generations in a row would have a cost.

Apple already moved the Pro baseline from 128GB to 256GB. Making another immediate jump to 512GB would increase the amount of NAND Flash required for every base-model iPhone 18 Pro sold.

During a period of unusually high memory prices, that becomes a much more expensive decision.

And storage isn't the only component under pressure.

MacRumors reports that TrendForce expects higher costs for RAM, storage, and Apple's A20 Pro chip to contribute to pricing pressure on the iPhone 18 Pro generation.

Keeping 256GB as the base capacity could therefore represent a compromise.
