The S Pen Is Dead on the Fold 8. Here’s Why and What to Use Instead

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 removed the S Pen slot to achieve a thinner build. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra don't just lack a slot — they don't support S Pen input at all. This is a more significant change than the slot removal, and the reason is directly tied to the new Flex Titanium display technology Samsung introduced this generation.

The Technical Reason: Titanium vs. Digitizers

The S Pen works through an electromagnetic resonance (EMR) digitizer embedded in the display stack. EMR digitizers require the layers above and below them to be electrically transparent — they can't function reliably when a metal layer is present in close proximity.

Flex Titanium replaces the previous carbon-fiber polymer support layer with a titanium-alloy film. Titanium is a metal. That metal layer sits directly in the display stack, between the hinge and the OLED panel, precisely where the digitizer needs unobstructed signal passage. The result: S Pen input is physically incompatible with the current Flex Titanium implementation.

This isn't Samsung cutting a feature to save cost. It's a genuine engineering tradeoff. The titanium layer provides 20x the mechanical stiffness of the old polymer layer, dramatically reducing long-term crease development. But it makes stylus digitizers non-functional in the process.

What Samsung Said at Unpacked

During a Q&A session with Samsung EVP HS Moon at Galaxy Unpacked 2026 in London, he addressed the S Pen directly: "Our decisions are always shaped around the priorities that we have for that generation, and for this generation, our priorities were about offering foldables that were slimmer, lighter, and basically more portable devices that also offer large viewing experiences."

When pressed on the future, Moon said Samsung is "exploring" the return of S Pen to the Fold lineup — but gave no timeline. Multiple analysts have noted that resolving the Flex Titanium/digitizer conflict will likely require either a new display architecture or a different stylus technology than current EMR. Neither is a near-term fix.

Who This Actually Affects

The S Pen was never a mainstream Fold use case. Samsung's own data from the Fold 5 generation (when S Pen support first arrived, without a slot) indicated that under 15% of Fold owners regularly used the stylus. For that 15%, however, the loss is significant:

  • Note-takers who annotate documents directly on the inner display
  • Creatives using the Fold as a sketch pad or digital notepad
  • S Pen ecosystem users who use Samsung Notes with handwriting-to-text conversion
  • Users upgrading from a Fold 5 who specifically bought that model for stylus support

For everyone else — users who primarily use the Fold for multitasking, media, productivity apps, and the wider inner screen — the S Pen removal has no practical impact on daily use.

What Stylus Users Should Do

Option 1: Accept the tradeoff and buy the Fold 8 Ultra anyway. If the Flex Titanium display improvements, the silicon-carbon battery, and the camera upgrades matter more than the S Pen, the Fold 8 Ultra is still Samsung's most capable foldable. Most productivity use cases — split-screen multitasking, DeX mode, Samsung Notes text input — work without stylus input.

Option 2: Consider the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra for S Pen use. Samsung's tablet lineup retains full S Pen support. For users who primarily use the S Pen for creative work, a Fold 8 Ultra paired with a Tab S10 Ultra covers both the portable foldable use case and the precision stylus use case.

Option 3: Wait. Samsung has not said S Pen is permanently gone from the Fold lineup. "Exploring its return" is not a commitment, but it's not a burial either. If S Pen is genuinely important to your Fold use case, the Fold 9 generation (expected July 2027) may address the Flex Titanium/digitizer conflict.

The Case Implication: Thinner Is Now Actually Thinner

One underappreciated consequence of removing S Pen support: the Fold 8 Ultra is the thinnest Galaxy Z Fold yet at 4.1mm unfolded and 8.9mm folded. Without the need to route any stylus-compatible layers through the display stack, Samsung had more engineering room to reduce overall thickness.

A thinner device pairs especially well with a slim Kevlar® case rather than a bulkier TPU option. The Benks ArmorGrid Air Grand Combo for Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra adds only ~0.6mm to the back panel — keeping the Fold 8 Ultra's slim profile while protecting the hinge and cover screen. If you prefer more robust hinge protection, the ArmorGrid Pro Grand Combo wraps the hinge in TPU at ~1.2mm additional profile.

FAQ

Does the Galaxy Z Fold 8 have S Pen support?
No. Neither the Fold 8 nor the Fold 8 Ultra support S Pen input. The Flex Titanium display layer is physically incompatible with EMR digitizers.

Can I use any stylus on the Fold 8 Ultra?
Capacitive styluses (which work on any touchscreen without a dedicated digitizer) work on the Fold 8 Ultra's cover screen and inner display. They do not offer the pressure sensitivity or precision of the S Pen's EMR system.

Will the Galaxy Z Fold 9 have S Pen?
Samsung has not confirmed this. Samsung EVP HS Moon said the company is "exploring" S Pen's return but gave no timeline or commitment.

Is the Fold 8 Ultra still worth buying without S Pen?
For most users, yes. S Pen was used by a relatively small percentage of Fold owners. The silicon-carbon battery, Flex Titanium display, and camera upgrades are meaningful improvements for the majority use case.
